The soldiers have one thing in their advantage, the Stasis modules, and one to their detriment, their primary weapon which is not made for cutting Necromorphs to pieces, but for penetrating vital organs on human targets. If that's too long: The Slasher was practically made of a fast-acting mutagenic bacteria meaning even one cut from its blades would deposit enough to kick off the mutation on corpses that, by the time anyone found out about the real problem would've been locked up out of sight and you've got an instant Necromorph Infection. By the time we can hear stuff from the Valor it's already set to automatically broadcast its message about all that stuff.

It is entirely possible for the Slasher to have converted three or four people without -anyone- being aware of it and twenty minutes later their corpses start to recombine in a freezer aboardship. Especially that moment in the Valor when she pops up on a screen and a skull briefly flashes over her face.

Not to mention that based on what I remember there was at least one Unitologist aboard the Valor and furthermore: the microbe responsible for creating Necromorphs only needs the infectors to inject a massive dose to work quickly, a small dose replicates so quickly that it can even strip dead skin cells from the -air- to convert it into the Corruption in minutes or hours. Coming from someone that played ds2 for years before I played dead space 1, the Nicole scenes in 1 are way creepier. Also consider that the primary weapon utilized by the Marines in question is very very inefficient for killing even -ONE- Necromorph.
