Plus after seeing titles such as Fortnite gain cross-play support across all platforms, some saw a glimmer of hope, but it doesn’t look like that will be happening anymore (at least for now).
Many had expected that Blizzard might be serious about cross-play implementation after they announced that Diablo 3 would be launching on the Nintendo Switch. The statement made to DualShockers reads, “While we love the idea of bringing our players together across platforms, we do not have any plans to implement cross-platform gameplay for Diablo at this time.” This doesn’t mean that Blizzard has completely shut the doors on cross-play support, but just don’t expect to see it anytime soon. Diablo 3 does not support cross-platform play between different console and platform due to technological differences and the difficulty in balancing the gameplay across so many devices. Blizzard has since released a statement confirming that they do not have plans to support cross-play at this time. Players can play Diablo 3 on different systems, but they cannot play together. The company had stated back then that cross-play was something they wanted to explore and was interested in, but unfortunately it seems that there are no plans to implement it now for. Business Insider also reports that Blizzard is in talks with platform holders mainly, Sony and Microsoft to get cross-play working. Yes, Diablo 3 is cross-platform between Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. However Blizzard had previously hinted that cross-play was something they were interested in. However due the different online systems used by Sony and Microsoft, console players could not play with each other. While the Diablo franchise has largely been designed for PC gamers, Diablo 3 marked the first time the company brought the series onto consoles.
